Attend a Winemakers Dinner
A winemaker’s dinner pairs a multi-course meal with wines chosen — and often introduced — by the person who made them. It is part tasting, part storytelling: you hear how weather, grape variety, ageing and blending shaped each bottle, then notice how the wine changes alongside food. The best evenings feel conversational rather than like a sales presentation, and non-experts should be as welcome as collectors. Check the number of courses, serving sizes, finish time and whether service, water or transport is included. Tell the venue about allergies and dietary needs before booking; a pairing menu cannot always be improvised on the night. Alcohol-free diners should ask whether a considered alternative pairing is available. Eat normally beforehand, drink water, use the spittoon if offered and never feel obliged to finish a pour. Arrange a lift, taxi or public transport home and remember that buying bottles is optional. Take a few notes, but give the meal your attention. One new wine, producer or food pairing that you genuinely understand is a better result than a row of empty glasses.
