Attend San Vino Wine Fight, Spain

Haro’s Batalla del Vino is a wine-soaked local tradition held on 29 June in La Rioja. The morning begins early with a pilgrimage to the Riscos de Bilibio and a religious observance before the crowd throws, sprays and pours red wine until white clothes turn purple. It is exuberant and messy, but it belongs to a wider feast day and community history rather than being a generic drinking party. Read the municipality or regional tourism guidance before travelling and arrange accommodation and transport early. Wear old white clothing, a red neckerchief, closed shoes with grip and eye protection if you prefer; protect your phone and leave valuables behind. Use only suitable containers, follow police and organiser instructions, and never aim forcefully at faces or involve someone who is trying to leave. The ground becomes slippery and the crowd dense, so alcohol, dehydration and rough behaviour increase the risk quickly. Afterwards, change into dry clothes and dispose of rubbish properly. Treat the mass, procession and residents with respect: taking part well means understanding the tradition as well as embracing the chaos.
