Attend the Sapporo Snow Festival
The Sapporo Snow Festival is a city-wide winter event centred on three linked sites: the Odori Park display of large-scale snow sculptures through the city centre, the Susukino ice-sculpture area illuminated at night, and the family-focused Tsudome site with slides and snow play. Together they form a 1.5 km route of sculptures, stages and food stalls that is easiest to experience on foot and by short subway rides between sites. Visit with enough time to see Odori in daylight for sculpture detail and return after dusk to view the illuminated works at Susukino; reserve the Tsudome stop for children or anyone who wants to use supervised snow slides or play zones. The walking route, temporary exhibits and food stalls make the festival a flexible day where you can pick a single site or combine two or three depending on energy and weather. The public displays are free to walk and view, though optional paid activities, food and transport costs are common (see planning costs). Expect winter conditions, queued viewing at major sculptures and a festive crowd—plan footwear for broken snow and ice and allow extra time for moving between sites by subway during peak hours.
