Be a Street Performer

Street performance creates a tiny public venue out of an ordinary pavement. Music is only one option: spoken word, circus, dance, magic, living statue and visual performance can all work if they are clear, safe and able to catch attention quickly. Start with a short set you can repeat confidently and choose a place where people can stop without blocking shops, crossings or accessible routes. Rules vary by council and location. Check whether you need a busking licence or permission, along with restrictions on amplification, selling recordings, age, hours and pitch allocation. Private shopping areas and transport property may have separate rules. Rehearse at performance volume, secure equipment against wind, keep cables covered and have a simple way to protect money and valuables. Never pressure passers-by to pay, photograph children or obstruct someone who wants to move on. Be considerate of residents, traders and other performers; rotate or leave when your agreed time ends. A successful first session might be only thirty minutes, a few genuine interactions and enough confidence to return.
