Become a Community Befriender

Offer regular conversation to someone who may have far fewer chances to talk than you realise. Befriending can involve a phone call, a walk, a cup of tea or help joining a local activity, with consistency often more valuable than grand gestures. Good schemes match volunteers through a recognised organisation, provide boundaries and safeguarding, and explain what to do if concerns arise. The role is companionship rather than counselling, personal care or managing another person's money. Apply through a reputable local service, complete the required checks and training, and be realistic about how often you can make contact. Protect confidentiality and use the coordinator when a situation moves beyond the role. Add this to your list to make dependable human contact part of your contribution.
