Become a reading volunteer
Spend regular, supervised time helping someone practise reading, build confidence and enjoy books. Roles vary: one-to-one in primary schools, group support in community settings, or remote sessions using secure platforms. Organisations provide induction, a named contact and simple session plans so volunteers focus on listening, encouragement and positive feedback. Most programmes ask for a regular weekly commitment during school term time or a fixed block (for example, 30 minutes weekly for an academic year). Training commonly covers safeguarding, positive reading strategies and boundaries; in-school placements normally require an Enhanced DBS check and supervised introduction to the class or setting. You will usually follow a short structure each session: greet the learner, read together (shared or paired reading), discuss the text briefly, and record progress or notes for the teacher. Bring patience, a positive attitude and an openness to follow the teacher’s guidance — the role supports classroom teaching rather than replacing it. Expect flexible roles for people who cannot attend in person: many charities run online reading volunteer programmes with secure platforms and coordinator support. Before you start, confirm travel arrangements, expenses policy, required checks and the minimum commitment with the placing organisation.
