Build a Blanket Fort and Sleep in It

a living room filled with furniture and a flat screen tv

Gather blankets, sheets and cushions to construct a cosy makeshift shelter in a living room, bedroom or play space. Use chairs, sofas, table edges or lightweight poles as anchors and secure fabrics with clips, pegs or clothespins so the roof stays up during the evening. Arrange a comfortable sleeping area inside using a mattress, folded blankets or camping mats and add pillows, fairy lights and a small bedside bag for a torch, water and a phone. Test ventilation, sightlines and stability before settling down and agree an easy exit route with everyone using the fort. Treat the night as a short, low-effort camp: read together, tell stories or play quiet games by torchlight and keep snacks and drinks in spill-proof containers. Remove fragile ornaments or electrical items from inside the fort and supervise young children at all times. Clear the space the following morning, airing any cushions or bedding used and storing borrowed household items. Consider variations — a themed fort (cinema, star-gazing), rooftop-safe versions using a tent base, or a daytime play-only den — and adapt materials for accessibility or household rules.
