Build a Piece of Furniture
Choose a straightforward first piece — a stool, small shelf or side table — and plan it around the tools and space available. Measure, sketch simple joinery, buy or reclaim suitable stock and make a short cutting list so the build proceeds in logical stages. Set up a safe workspace: clear a stable bench, mark out parts, cut to size and prepare joinery in controlled steps. Use clamps, simple jigs and trial dry-assembly to check fit before glue or permanent fixings; where possible practise joints on offcuts first. Finish and protect the assembled piece: sand progressively, remove dust, then apply an appropriate finish (wipe-on oil, varnish or water-based polyurethane) in multiple thin coats, sanding lightly between coats for a durable surface. Allow full curing time before heavy use. Keep safety and maintenance in mind: manage wood dust and solvents with ventilation and RPE, avoid overloading or unstable legs, and label or note the materials and finishes used so the piece can be repaired or refinished in future.
