Build and monitor nesting boxes
Plan, build and install species-appropriate nesting boxes and then run a simple monitoring routine to record occupancy, nesting stage and outcomes. Start with a short planning session: choose target species (e.g. blue tit, house sparrow, robin, swift or barn owl), check legal/licensing requirements and get landowner permission. Use established designs for hole size, drainage and ventilation; position boxes where food and cover are nearby and provide a clear flight path to the entrance. Install boxes with predator protection and safe fixing methods, record each box’s GPS or clear site code, and photograph its mounting. During the breeding season follow minimal-disturbance monitoring protocols (visual checks every 3–4 days where recommended) and record dates, clutch sizes and outcomes using a simple survey form or an established scheme such as the BTO Nest Record Scheme or NestWatch. Use gathered records to inform local conservation (share with local bird groups or national schemes), perform autumn cleaning/maintenance, and review placement or design changes next season to improve occupancy and reduce predation risk.
