Camp in the back garden

Small family tent pitched on a domestic lawn at dusk with lantern light

Pitch a small tent or set out bedding on your lawn and spend an evening or overnight outdoors close to home. Keep the plan simple: choose a flat, cleared area of the garden, check for hazards (holes, ponds, terraces), and position your shelter away from fences and overhanging branches. Focus on the fundamentals of a comfortable night—insulation from the cold ground, a waterproof shelter, warm bedding and a reliable light source. Prepare food you can eat warm from a portable stove or pre-cooked from the kitchen; if you plan to use a barbecue or firepit, use a contained appliance and follow safety rules. Use the evening for low-impact nature observation: watch bats, moths and stars, or turn the experience into a family storytelling or simple outdoor-education session. Keep noise, lighting and waste considerate of neighbours and wildlife. Finish by packing away all kit, removing any traces of the camp, and returning furniture and plants to their normal positions; leave the garden as you found it to avoid damage or nuisance.
