Climb a frozen waterfall

man rappelling down waterfalls

A guided frozen-waterfall ice-climb places you on vertical ice formed by a waterfall or seep. With a qualified guide you learn to move on crampons, use technical ice tools, build temporary ice protection and climb fixed or lead routes across icefall features while managing spray, cold and changing conditions. Beginner-friendly sessions usually take place on short, well-formed falls and focus on stance, foot placement, swinging and controlled tool placement; intermediate objectives add multi-pitch movement, placing screws and mixed climbing techniques. Expect a combination of short approach on icy ground, time on the ice for coaching and a supervised descent. Because ice conditions depend on freeze–thaw cycles, organisers choose sites and dates based on up-to-date condition reports; days can be cancelled or re-routed for safety. Instruction is delivered by mountain/guide professionals with appropriate qualifications (MTUK/ACMG/UIAA-recognised or equivalent) and with full technical kit supplied when necessary. This experience is physically and technically demanding in exposed cold; it suits adults and older teens with good balance, comfortable with heights, and able to follow safety briefings and ropework instructions. Clothing and personal kit lists are provided by the operator and may include hire options for boots, crampons and tools.
