Complete a long-distance cycling sportive
Choose a graded, mass-participation sportive route and prepare to complete it by building progressive endurance, practising nutrition and mechanical skills, and rehearsing event logistics. Focus on matching route distance and elevation to your current fitness; many events offer multiple route options so you can select a realistic target and still share the event day atmosphere. Follow a structured plan that increases long-ride distance gradually, includes one key long ride per week, and introduces back-to-back day rides before longer events (200km+). Practise on-route eating and drinking so your gut tolerates the carbohydrate plan you will use on event day, and include some strength and mobility work off the bike to reduce injury risk. Assemble and test a practical kit list: two bottles (water and electrolyte), enough ride-based food to supply roughly 60 g carbohydrate per hour for long efforts, spare inner tube, tyre levers, multi-tool, mini-pump or CO2, ID, phone, emergency contact and a lightweight waterproof/gilet for variable conditions. On the day, start conservatively, stick to your nutrition schedule and use feed stops to reset rather than trying to make up time by exceeding sustainable pace. Plan logistics: book entry and travel early, check event services (mechanical support, baggage, cut-off times), recon or study route profile and climb locations, and allow at least one adequate taper and rest day before the event. If you have significant increases in training load or existing health concerns, get medical advice before beginning a high-volume programme.
