Complete an open‑water swimming event

A calm lake with a line of orange buoys under a cloudy sky

Pick a distance or festival event, then train, register and complete the swim at a supervised, organised open‑water meeting. Prepare with progressive open‑water practice and at least one coached or club session so you’re comfortable sighting, drafting and breathing in choppier water than a pool. Confirm event distance, wetsuit rules, cut‑off times and any minimum‑competence declarations before you enter. On the day, follow the event safety briefing, sign in with marshals, use a bright swim hat and tow float if recommended, and warm up gradually to reduce cold‑shock. Leave sufficient time for changing, briefing and a staged start; treat all race signage and safety staff instructions as final. After the swim, rewarm with dry layers and warm drinks, report any symptoms to medical staff, and confirm how / where results and photographs will be published by the organiser.
