Complete the Five Peaks Challenge

Complete the Five Peaks Challenge

The Five Peaks Challenge links Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, Yr Wyddfa, Slieve Donard and Carrauntoohil—the highest mountains of Scotland, England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland. Together they create a major mountain and transport project across two islands. The achievement is sound judgement sustained over all five peaks, not a clock that encourages tired people to ignore weather. Build experience gradually on comparable terrain and complete long back-to-back hill days before setting a schedule. Study the normal routes, escape options, access rules and current advice for each mountain; Scottish, Welsh, English, Northern Irish and Irish mapping and emergency arrangements are not interchangeable. Carry waterproofs, warm layers, food, water, torch, first aid, map and compass, and know how to use navigation without relying on signal or battery. Check mountain-specific forecasts and ground conditions before every ascent and turn around for poor visibility, wind, heat, snow, flooding, injury or fatigue. Use a competent leader where group experience is insufficient. Drivers should be rested, legal, insured and separate from the climbing effort; ferry, border and road logistics need generous margins. Never pressure someone to continue for sponsorship or a published target, and contact emergency services only for genuine need. Reduce impact on paths, parking areas and mountain communities, travel in a suitably sized group and use local facilities responsibly. Consider completing the peaks over five separate trips, which allows each landscape proper attention and greatly reduces transport fatigue. Record routes and decisions as well as summit photographs. Completion means everyone returns safely having respected all five mountains—even if changing conditions stretch the challenge across months rather than one punishing dash.
