Create a sculpture

Choose a material and shape a finished object you can keep: this workshop teaches modelling and simple carving techniques so you can complete a small sculpture in one session or over several meetings. Start with a forgiving material (air-dry or polymer clay, plaster or a soft carving stone such as alabaster/soapstone) and learn basic tools, armature and support, proportion and surface finish. Instructors demonstrate modelling, subtractive carving and simple joining, then supervise individual practice and finishing (sanding, sealing, basic patina or paint). Classes work at a steady, practical pace: beginners are guided through one complete small piece (figurative, abstract or functional) while learning safe tool use, material-specific drying/firing requirements and simple conservation advice for display or gifting. Suitable both as a one-off taster and as a short course that builds skills across sessions; the activity emphasises making something finished and durable rather than an exercise that remains incomplete.
