Decorate a Blank T-Shirt

Decorate a Blank T-Shirt

A plain T-shirt is forgiving material for an idea that deserves to leave the sketchbook. Paint can create bold blocks, embroidery adds texture, tie-dye produces controlled surprises and a carved stamp can repeat one imperfect mark across the fabric. The result is art that has to work while moving, folding and being washed. Choose a technique before choosing the shirt. Natural fibres often accept dye and paint differently from synthetics, so read both labels and pre-wash without fabric softener. Draw the design at full size, try the colours on a scrap and decide where it should sit when the shirt is being worn rather than lying flat. Slide card inside to prevent bleed-through and secure the fabric without stretching it out of shape. Use products intended for textiles and follow their ventilation, glove, heat-setting and washing instructions. Protect surfaces, keep irons and heat tools attended and never mix dyes or chemicals casually. If working with children, select age-appropriate materials and supervise cutting and heat. Create your own image or use artwork licensed for the purpose; a favourite character, logo or photograph is not automatically free to reproduce or sell. Let every layer cure fully before turning the shirt over or trying it on. Wear it once before deciding that the design is finished. A small stitched correction, another printed shape or the confidence to leave some blank fabric can turn a craft experiment into the shirt people ask about.
