Go Fishing

Cast a line into a river, lake, canal or sea and spend a few hours trying to turn patience into a catch. Fishing can be as simple as sitting on a bank with basic tackle or as involved as heading offshore with specialist equipment and a guide. The experience changes completely depending on what you are trying to catch, but the core challenge is the same: choose the right spot, present the bait or lure properly and wait for something to take it. There are many different forms of fishing, from coarse and fly fishing to sea angling and predator fishing. Beginners need to learn the basics of casting, tying knots, baiting hooks, handling fish and recognising local rules. You do not need to become an expert for this to count, but understanding how to fish responsibly matters, particularly around legal sizes, protected species, catch limits and whether fish should be released. Start somewhere beginner-friendly, ideally with an experienced angler, instructor or charter operator if you have never fished before. Check whether you need a licence or permit, use appropriate tackle for the species and water, and handle any fish carefully. Add this to your list and see whether you can turn a few hours beside the water into your first proper catch.
