Go to a Paint Party

Go to a Paint Party

Pick up a brush, pour a drink if there’s one on offer, and start painting alongside a room full of people who are all working from the same idea. Paint parties are usually guided sessions rather than formal art classes: an instructor takes everyone through a picture step by step, but nobody’s version comes out exactly the same. The result is part artwork, part social event, with plenty of scope to laugh at the bits that went wrong and decide you actually quite like them. Most sessions are designed for beginners, so you do not need to know anything about colour mixing, composition or brush technique before you arrive. The structure takes away the intimidating blank-canvas problem while still leaving room to personalise what you make. Some events reproduce a set landscape or still life; others use seasonal themes, portraits, abstract painting or more experimental prompts. Because everyone is creating at the same time, the atmosphere tends to be less serious than a conventional workshop. Look for a local paint-and-sip night, community art event, private group session or studio workshop. Materials such as canvas, brushes, paint and aprons are normally included, although food and drink arrangements vary. Go with friends if you want an easy group activity, or turn up alone and let the shared task do some of the social work for you. Add this to your list and leave with something you made yourself, however closely it resembles the example.
