Go to a Toga Party

Go to a Toga Party

Wrap, pin, adjust, walk three steps and wrap it again. A toga party asks everyone to arrive in an outfit based loosely on ancient Rome, then tests whether those costumes can survive dancing, snacks and a crowded room. Half the entertainment comes from seeing who engineered a convincing drape and who brought a bedsheet with ambitions. The historical toga was a substantial wool garment worn over a tunic by Roman citizens for public life; it was not the simple unisex sheet costume used at modern parties. Knowing that difference makes the theme funnier and gives you better material for decorations, games or a knowingly inaccurate laurel crown. Wear ordinary clothing underneath, use fabric that allows safe movement and fasten it with proper clips rather than sharp improvised pins. Check the host's dress expectations and avoid symbols or costumes that turn real cultures into a joke. If you are organising, provide spare fabric and a wrapping guide near the door. Add this to your list for an evening of classical references and very modern wardrobe failures.
