Hike the Active Pacaya Volcano | Guatemala

Sunrise over Guatemala's volcanic landscape seen from Pacaya.

Pacaya rises through black volcanic ground where each ridge changes the view: old lava underfoot, cloud dragging across the cone and Guatemala's other volcanoes appearing beyond the horizon when the air clears. Its activity and permitted routes can change quickly. Check current CONRED and park information, use only an officially open trail and take a licensed local guide whenever rules or conditions require one; a summit or lava approach is never owed to the itinerary. Wear footwear with grip, carry water and weather layers, pace for heat and altitude, and turn back for ash, gas, storms, poor visibility or official instruction. Never walk on fresh lava, cross barriers or follow guides who treat active vents as photo props. Count it complete after reaching the highest authorised viewpoint safely on the day—not after entering a closure or standing beside molten rock. Add it if you want a landscape that makes geology feel immediate, while leaving enough distance for respect.
