Host a foreign exchange student

Hosting an exchange student means opening ordinary family life to a young person who is studying away from home: meals, school-day routines, language mistakes, celebrations and the quiet hours between excursions. The value comes from dependable care and mutual curiosity, not treating the student as free childcare, a permanent guest performer or a shortcut to claiming another culture. Apply only through an established school, licensed sponsor or accredited exchange organisation that checks the home, matches placements and provides safeguarding, insurance and a twenty-four-hour contact. UK immigration and accommodation rules depend on age, course and length of stay, and arrangements described as homestays may have specific sponsor duties. Never organise an unaccompanied minor's placement informally through social media. Complete every required interview, reference and criminal-record or safeguarding check, and ensure all household members understand boundaries. Provide a private appropriate bed, food, heating, internet expectations, study space and safe transport. Agree money, chores, curfews, religion, dietary needs, medical information, photographs and contact with parents before arrival. The student must know how to report discomfort without relying on the host. Include them in daily choices while allowing privacy, friendships and contact with home. Explain UK habits without mocking theirs, use clear language and involve the programme coordinator early if conflict, illness or homesickness develops. Completion is successfully providing the agreed safe placement through an authorised programme and learning from one another—not becoming a legal parent, expecting gratitude, forcing family intimacy or continuing a placement that safeguarding professionals say should end.
