Learn How to Create the Perfect “Smokey Eye”
A smokey eye is a blending technique, not one compulsory black shape. Colour is deepest near the lashes and diffuses gradually through the crease with no hard edge. Brown, plum, charcoal, navy or softer neutrals can all create the effect, and adapting placement to your eye shape matters more than copying a dramatic studio photograph. Begin on clean skin in good light. Choose a transition shade, a deeper tone and a small amount of the darkest colour. Apply little by little, blend with a clean brush and check both eyes from normal conversation distance. Keep the lower lash line softer than the top and add liner or mascara only when the shadow balance works. Practise before the event when you intend to wear it. Do not share mascara, eyeliner, brushes or products that contact the eye. Wash hands, clean reusable tools and replace products according to their hygiene guidance. Stop immediately if makeup causes pain, swelling, marked redness or vision change, and never apply to an infected or injured eye. Contact-lens users should follow their lens-care advice and remove makeup thoroughly. Photograph the finished result in daylight and note which brush, colours and placement worked. Completion is a blended look you can reproduce comfortably on yourself or, with consent and clean tools, on somebody else—not making both eyes mechanically identical or buying a large new palette.
