Learn to Read Your Payslip

Look past the bold net-pay figure and account for every line between what you earned and what reached your bank. Reading a payslip turns codes and deductions into a usable explanation of tax, National Insurance, pension contributions, overtime, benefits and any repayment taken through payroll. Gross pay is the amount before deductions; net pay is what remains. A payslip should identify variable deductions and may also show a tax code, pay period, hours, pension amounts, student-loan deductions and year-to-date totals. A code or figure that looks unfamiliar is not automatically wrong, but understanding it helps you spot missing hours, an unexpected emergency tax code or a deduction that no longer applies. Take one recent payslip and compare it with your employment terms, time record and bank payment. Work from top to bottom, looking up each abbreviation through HMRC, MoneyHelper or your employer's payroll guidance. Protect the document because it contains personal and financial identifiers. If something does not reconcile, ask payroll for an explanation in writing; contact HMRC through official channels about tax-code questions. Repeat the exercise after a pay rise, bonus, change of benefits or pension decision. Keep payslips securely because they can provide evidence of earnings and tax paid. Add this to your list to understand the journey from salary to spendable money and catch mistakes while the records are easy to retrieve.
