Learn to use chopsticks

A vegetable meal served in bowls with a pair of wooden chopsticks.

The first piece turns, slips and lands exactly where it began. Then the lower chopstick stays still, the upper one moves, and a gesture that looked impossibly delicate becomes a steady way to eat. Rest one chopstick against the base of the thumb and ring finger, hold the second like a pencil and move only the upper stick. Start with firm cubes or pieces of vegetable before trying rice, noodles or anything polished with sauce. Use a pair that is comfortable rather than decorative, practise over a plate and stop before hand tension turns into a battle. Etiquette differs across cultures, but common courtesies include not pointing, drumming, spearing food or leaving chopsticks standing upright in a bowl of rice. Count it complete when you can eat a full suitable meal without changing to another utensil. Add it if you like a useful skill whose progress can be measured one mouthful at a time.
