Make a Handmade Greeting Card

Fold a piece of card, decide who it is for, and make something they could never pick up from a shop shelf. A handmade greeting card can be as simple as a drawing and a few carefully chosen words, or as elaborate as layered paper, collage, stamping, calligraphy, pressed flowers or a pop-up design. The appeal comes from the fact that somebody has spent time making it specifically for one person. The creative challenge is turning a message into something visual. Colour, lettering, layout and materials all help set the tone, whether you are making a birthday card, thank-you note, anniversary card or something for no particular occasion at all. You do not need strong drawing skills either; simple shapes, cut paper, photographs, stickers or printed elements can work just as well as illustration. Start with basic card stock and whatever craft materials you already have, then sketch the layout lightly before committing to glue or ink. Keep the design personal rather than trying to make it look commercially perfect, and leave enough room inside for the message itself. Add this to your list and make the card part of the gift rather than just the packaging around it.
