Make a Terrarium

Small green plants growing inside clear and blue glass jars.

A terrarium begins as a handful of separate textures: gravel, dark compost, moss and plants small enough to hold between two fingers. Layer by layer, the glass becomes a miniature landscape that catches light and changes quietly over the weeks. Choose an open container for dry-loving plants or a lidded one for humidity-loving species, then match plants with similar needs. Build drainage and growing layers, arrange the plants with room to develop and water sparingly rather than flooding the container. Use clean materials and plants that are legal and responsibly sourced; do not collect moss or wild plants without permission. Wear gloves if needed, wash hands after handling compost and keep unsuitable plants or decorative materials away from children and pets. Count it complete when the terrarium is planted, positioned in appropriate indirect light and has a simple care plan. Add it if you want a creative project that keeps unfolding after the making is finished, rewarding observation more than constant attention.
