Make a Wish in the Trevi Fountain | Italy

Rome’s Trevi Fountain stages water, stone and city life on a theatrical scale, and tossing a coin over the shoulder has become a ritual associated with returning to Rome. The wish takes only a moment, but seeing Nicola Salvi’s great Baroque composition up close rewards a slower look at the figures, rockwork and movement around the basin. Check the fountain’s official website immediately before visiting. Since 2 February 2026, non-residents pay €2 to enter the inner perimeter closest to the monument during managed hours, while arrangements and closures can change for cleaning, maintenance or crowd control. Buy access only through the official system and keep the broader piazza and neighbouring streets moving. When permitted, stand at the designated edge and toss one ordinary coin backwards into the water without climbing, sitting on the stonework or interfering with another visitor. Never enter the fountain, retrieve coins or throw objects other than the accepted coin. Keep bags closed and valuables secure in the dense crowd, and take photographs without blocking the controlled route or using intrusive equipment. Step away once the ritual is complete and spend time appreciating the monument and surrounding city rather than repeating the throw for content. Follow staff instructions and accept that conservation work may temporarily change the experience. Completion is making one lawful coin wish from the authorised visitor area and treating the fountain as protected heritage—not bathing, scrambling for money, buying from an unofficial tout or believing a wish entitles anyone to ignore Rome’s current access rules.
