Participate in the Rickshaw Run, India
The Rickshaw Run is an organised adventure across India in a small auto-rickshaw, with teams navigating and repairing their way between official start and finish points. It is intentionally uncertain, but that does not make risk, local law or other road users part of the joke. The strongest experience combines teamwork and improvisation with humility about the country being travelled through. Use the organiser’s current event page and entry agreement for route, vehicle, training, licence, insurance, visa, fundraising and support terms. From the UK, check FCDO India warnings for every proposed region and obtain the required 1949 International Driving Permit before departure. Insurance must explicitly cover the event and vehicle; ordinary travel or car cover may exclude both. Share driving, avoid night and fog, wear proper footwear and the best protective equipment the vehicle allows, and never drive after alcohol or drugs. Carry water, offline navigation, charged communications and an emergency reserve. Inspect brakes, tyres, lights and steering daily, follow local police and organiser instructions, and use a well-maintained alternative if the rickshaw becomes unsafe. Do not race public traffic, enter an area against official advice, photograph people intrusively or use poverty and breakdowns as comic scenery. Pay fairly, minimise waste and learn basic language and road etiquette. Completion is lawfully taking an official team rickshaw from the designated start to finish, or following the supported withdrawal process when safety requires it—not hiding an accident, bribing around a restriction or treating the absence of a fixed route as permission to ignore judgement.
