Read a Banned Book

Read a Banned Book

Choose a book somebody tried to remove from a shelf, then read the words that caused the argument. The experience may reveal provocative material, an ordinary story caught in a political campaign or a perspective that one community wanted another group prevented from encountering. ā€œBannedā€ and ā€œchallengedā€ are not interchangeable. A challenge asks for a book to be removed or restricted; a ban is the removal itself. The American Library Association records thousands of challenged titles and explains that objections frequently focus on race, sexuality, gender and accounts of lived experience. Context matters, including where, when and for whom access was disputed. Use a library or a reputable censorship database to choose a documented case, then read the book before reading the objections and the decision. Pick material appropriate for you, and discuss it without assuming every critic has the same motive. Add this to your list to examine the text itself instead of inheriting somebody else’s certainty about it.
