Ride on a Cable Car

A cable car crosses above Rio de Janeiro's harbour and city buildings.

A cable car leaves the station, the ground falls away and familiar streets, trees or mountain paths rearrange themselves into a map. The ride may last only minutes, but the suspended viewpoint makes the distance feel much larger. Choose an aerial cableway with a meaningful change in height or landscape and ride the full public route. Some are urban transport; others reach mountain viewpoints, ski areas or historic sites, so check whether the upper station needs additional walking, tickets or timed access. Use a regulated public system and follow the operator's instructions on boarding, capacity, children, mobility equipment and loose items. Check wind, lightning, visibility and closure notices on the day; accessibility varies by cabin and station, so confirm step-free access and assistance before travelling. Count it complete after a full cable-car journey, ideally with enough time at the far station to understand where the ride has taken you. Add it if you want the pleasure of travel condensed into one clear sequence: departure, lift and a view that opens beneath you.
