Ride on the underground
The London Underground turns a city map into a working network of coloured lines, deep-level tunnels, historic stations and modern interchanges. For a first-time rider, the achievement is not merely entering a train but planning and completing a useful Tube journey: choosing a direction, changing lines and emerging in the right part of London. Use TfL Go or Journey Planner to check service changes, fares, quieter times and step-free routes. Pay as you go with the same contactless card or device at both ends, or use the correct Oyster product; never alternate devices mid-journey. Accessibility varies substantially between stations, although staff provide Turn Up and Go assistance and many routes have lifts or ramps. Let passengers leave first, move down inside the carriage and keep bags away from doors. Stand on the right of escalators unless signage says otherwise, hold the handrail and never enter a closing door. Keep valuables secure, remove headphones when announcements matter and follow staff during disruption or evacuation. On the platform, stay behind the line. Complete a journey involving at least one interchange and use station signs rather than following a crowd. Notice one piece of design or history without obstructing commuters. Completion is touching in and out correctly and reaching the intended exit—not visiting every line, entering tunnels or treating a busy transport system as a film set.
