See a Blowhole

Sea spray erupting from the Nakalele Blowhole on Maui.

For a moment the coast seems to breathe. A wave enters a sea cave, pressure builds beneath the rock, and spray erupts through an opening with a roar that can be heard before the plume appears. Choose an established public viewpoint and visit when swell, tide and wind make a display possible without making the approach unsafe. Several quiet minutes may pass between bursts; waiting and watching the pattern is part of the experience. Stay behind barriers and well back from the opening and cliff edge. Never lean over a blowhole, turn your back on the sea or cross a closure for a better photograph. Secure footwear and weather protection help, and local park or coastguard advice should overrule any generic timing suggestion. Count this complete when you have safely watched seawater forced through a natural coastal opening from a permitted viewpoint. The spectacle lasts seconds, but it makes the hidden force and shape of the coastline suddenly visible.
