Shadow Someone in a Career That Interests You
Careers look different from inside a working day. Shadowing lets you hear the shorthand, watch decisions accumulate and see the unglamorous tasks beside the moments that first attracted you to the role. A few honest hours can clarify an ambition more sharply than weeks of browsing job descriptions. Approach someone through a workplace, professional body, school, university or trusted contact. Agree the date, duration, dress, confidentiality and what you may observe; prepare questions about the route in, daily pressures, skills, progression and what the person wishes they had known. The host organisation must approve the visit and protect clients, patients, pupils, commercially sensitive work and personal data. Follow safety and safeguarding rules, never record without permission and accept that parts of the day may be off limits. Ask for an accessible or remote alternative if the workplace creates a barrier. Count it complete after observing a meaningful part of the role and writing down three things you learned, including one surprise and one next step. Add it if you want evidence from real work before investing in a course, application or career change.
