Spend an evening at Elephant Rock, Saudi Arabia

Arrive as the heat begins to ease and watch Elephant Rock change colour with the falling sun. Known locally as Jabal AlFil, the 52-metre sandstone formation rises out of the AlUla desert with an arch that gives it the unmistakable outline of an elephant and its trunk. Stay after sunset and the setting shifts again: the rock is illuminated, fire pits and sunken seating fill with visitors, and the desert sky takes over as the light disappears. The shape is entirely natural. Wind, rain and sand have eroded the sandstone over millions of years, producing one of AlUla's best-known geological landmarks. The wider region is full of similarly strange formations, but Elephant Rock has become particularly associated with sunset because the low light emphasises the layers and warm tones in the stone. This is an easy experience to build into an AlUla trip. Elephant Rock currently opens in the late afternoon and stays open until midnight, with free parking and a short wooden approach from the car park; food, coffee and shisha are available on site. It sits around 20 minutes by car from AlUla Old Town, and there is no need to climb the formation itself, which is protected. Arrive before sunset, stay into the evening and give the place time to change around you rather than treating it as a five-minute photo stop.
