Start an Annual Community Park Clean-Up

Volunteers collecting litter together in a public green space.

A park clean-up begins with bags and gloves, but the memorable part is seeing neighbours who usually pass each other start working as a team. By the end, familiar paths look cared for and the group has created a visible reason to meet again next year. Ask the landowner or council for permission, agree the area and waste collection plan, then recruit a manageable group with a clear meeting point and finish time. Record what is collected so the next event can target recurring litter rather than simply repeating the same route. Provide gloves, litter pickers, high-visibility clothing where needed and separate sharps or hazardous waste procedures. Brief everyone not to touch needles, chemicals, broken glass or wildlife, supervise children closely, check insurance and weather, and plan step-free roles so people can contribute in different ways. Count it complete once the first authorised event is safely delivered and a realistic date or owner is agreed for the next one. Add it if you want a practical tradition that improves a shared place while making local connection easier.
