Swim in the Sea

Swim in the Sea

Walk beyond the final wash of foam and feel salt water lift you away from the beach. An ocean swim can mean five supervised minutes in gentle shallows or a trained open-water route, but even a calm-looking sea carries tides, waves, cold and currents that do not exist in a pool. Choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red-and-yellow flags. Check the forecast and tide, identify a safe exit and ask locally about rip currents, marine life and water quality. A bright tow float improves visibility but is not a substitute for ability, shore cover or a properly fitted wetsuit in cold water. Go with another person, enter gradually and stay well inside the distance you know you can swim back. If conditions exceed your experience or a red flag is flying, make the successful decision not to enter. Add this to your list and meet the scale of the ocean without underestimating its power.
