Take a Different Route to Work

A folding-bike commuter riding along a busy city street.

A commute becomes almost invisible through repetition. Turn onto a different street, leave at a different stop or cross the neighbourhood on foot, and the journey regains edges: a bakery opening, a canal path, a line of trees or a piece of the city you had edited out. Choose one change that is genuinely practical. Walk the final kilometre, cycle a protected route, take an earlier bus through another district or build in a park. Give yourself extra time so discovery does not become stress, and notice whether the route changes your energy when you arrive. Plan the full route before setting off, check daylight, weather, accessibility, service changes and any isolated sections, and tell someone if the variation is substantial. Follow the Highway Code, use crossings and cycle infrastructure, wear visible weather-appropriate clothing and do not handle a phone while moving. If a route feels unsafe, busy or inaccessible in practice, turn back and try a different version. Count this complete when you have reached work by a route you have not used before and found one detail worth remembering. Add it when you want a routine day to contain a small expedition without requiring extra leave, luggage or a distant destination.
