Cross a Country by Train

A passenger train crossing an open landscape.

A long train journey lets a country change at window speed. Suburbs loosen into fields, meals arrive in stations you would otherwise fly over and evening light can find you hundreds of miles from the morning platform. Choose a route that crosses a meaningful span of one country and confirm operators, reservations, connections, engineering work, border formalities where relevant and overnight arrangements. Leave recovery time around critical connections and keep an offline copy of tickets and the itinerary. Pack lightly enough to manage your own luggage, secure valuables and bring water, food, medication and a charger. Check assistance, wheelchair spaces, toilets and boarding procedures with each operator; rail accessibility can change at intermediate stations and replacement transport. Count it complete after travelling a substantial cross-country route primarily by scheduled passenger rail. Add it if you want distance to become visible, with the journey itself providing the continuity that an airport removes.
