Try a Barre Class

Barre is a studio fitness class inspired by elements of ballet training, Pilates and general conditioning. You use a fixed barre for balance while completing controlled movements, holds and small repeated pulses. It is usually low impact, but the sustained positions can make a modest-looking sequence surprisingly demanding. Expect a warm-up followed by sections for the legs, seat, core and upper body, sometimes using light weights, a ball or resistance band. Barre classes borrow ballet vocabulary, but you do not need dance experience or extreme flexibility. A good instructor explains alignment and offers a smaller range, a higher stance or a break when muscles fatigue. Choose a beginner-friendly class and arrive early enough to tell the instructor about injuries or mobility needs. Wear comfortable fitted clothing and socks or grip socks according to the studio rules. Do not force turned-out positions or copy a range of movement that your hips, knees or ankles cannot control. Most classes last 45 to 60 minutes. Complete the activity by attending one full barre class, using the barre safely and learning at least two adaptations that let you maintain controlled form.
