Catch, cook and eat a fish

A whole fish cooking in foil over an outdoor fire.

The meal begins before the plate: with quiet water, a line going taut and the responsibility of deciding whether this particular fish can legally and responsibly be kept. Cooking it close to where it was caught connects patience, skill and food in one clear sequence. Check the licence, permission, season, species, size and catch limits for the exact water before fishing. Release protected or unsuitable fish promptly; if keeping one is lawful, dispatch it humanely, chill it quickly and prepare it with clean hands and tools. Cook only where fires or stoves are permitted, avoid contaminating the water and take every scrap, hook and line away. Follow local food-safety advice and cook the fish thoroughly, especially when species or water-quality guidance calls for extra caution. Count it complete when you have legally caught, safely prepared and eaten one fish yourself—not when somebody else supplies the catch. Add it if you want a meal whose effort and provenance you can understand from beginning to end.
