Compete in a Frog Jumping Contest

Compete in a Frog Jumping Contest

Place the frog on the starting pad, step back and discover that motivation is mostly theatrical. Frog-jumping contests are won by coaxing an unpredictable animal through a sequence of leaps while a crowd cheers, laughs and develops very strong opinions about amphibian athleticism. The best-known version is California’s Calaveras County Jumping Frog Jubilee, inspired by Mark Twain’s story about a celebrated jumping frog. Local contests vary, but the distance is normally measured across a set number of jumps. The spectacle only works when animal welfare comes first: frogs must be handled minimally, kept at a suitable temperature and returned safely after the event. Enter an established contest with published welfare rules rather than staging your own with wild frogs. Follow limits on handling and jumping, wash your hands before and after contact without exposing the animal to soap or chemicals, and accept that your competitor may simply sit still. Add this to your list for a wonderfully odd community event where losing can be as funny as winning.
