Create a Bumper Sticker

Create a Bumper Sticker

A bumper sticker is a tiny travelling poster: six or seven words, one strong image and just enough attitude to be read before the traffic lights change. Creating your own lets you turn an in-joke, campaign, local identity or absurd observation into something physical that can travel on a car, bike box, laptop or notebook. Begin with the message and cut it until a stranger can understand it at a glance. Sketch several layouts, use thick lettering and test the design at actual size rather than admiring it enlarged on screen. High contrast survives distance and rain. If you include an illustration, make sure it supports the words instead of forcing them into unreadable corners. Use artwork, fonts and logos you created or have permission to reproduce. Avoid personal information, harassment and designs that could be mistaken for official safety markings. Order a weatherproof vinyl sample from a printer, or use printable outdoor sticker paper and a protective laminate. Clean and dry the surface first. The best version feels unmistakably yours without requiring an explanation. Print a few extras, give them to the people who understand the joke and enjoy seeing a private idea become a small public object.
