Drive a tank

Drive a tank

Climb into the driver’s position of a tracked armoured vehicle and find out how different it feels from anything built for ordinary roads. Tanks and similar military vehicles are heavy, noisy and surprisingly physical to control, with restricted visibility and tracks that respond very differently from car steering. Even at modest speeds, driving one across rough ground feels substantial. Civilian tank-driving experiences usually use decommissioned military vehicles on private land, with an instructor supervising from inside or alongside the vehicle. Depending on the operator, you might drive a main battle tank, armoured personnel carrier or another tracked vehicle rather than a fully operational modern tank. The experience is about handling the vehicle, not using its weapons, and any armament should be permanently disabled or otherwise controlled according to local law. Book with a reputable specialist operator and check exactly what vehicle you will actually drive, as “tank driving” is sometimes used loosely in experience listings. Wear clothes you do not mind getting dirty, expect a cramped interior, and follow the instructor closely when entering, exiting and manoeuvring the vehicle. Add this to your list and experience what it is like to control several tonnes of tracked machinery.
