See Up Helly Aa in Lerwick, Scotland

Torchbearers setting fire to the Up Helly Aa galley in Lerwick.

On a dark Shetland evening, hundreds of torches begin moving through Lerwick behind a hand-built galley. The procession turns streets into rivers of fire before the torches are thrown and months of community work disappear into one extraordinary blaze. Up Helly Aa is held on the last Tuesday in January, with marches and visits through the day before the evening procession. Visitors are welcome as spectators, while participation and the private halls belong to local customs and arrangements. Book travel and accommodation far ahead, then use the official programme because routes and timings can change. Expect darkness, cold, crowds and live flame: wear insulated waterproof layers, stay behind barriers, follow marshals and never enter the procession or burning area. Count it complete after watching the official torchlit procession and galley burning respectfully from a public viewing point. Add it if you want to see a festival sustained by a community, not merely staged for an audience.
