Bid with a Paddle at a Live Auction

Bidders seated in a live art auction room facing the auctioneer.

A live auction compresses a decision into a few raised hands. The auctioneer's rhythm gathers speed, a paddle lifts across the room and, for a moment, the price exists only because two people are still willing to answer. Choose a sale with something you genuinely understand and inspect the catalogue before the room becomes persuasive. Attend a viewing, read the condition report and watch several lots before bidding. The interesting part is not winning at any cost; it is making one clear decision in a setting designed to move quickly. Register in advance and read the auctioneer's terms, buyer's premium, tax, payment, collection, shipping and cancellation rules. A bid is normally binding. Set a maximum total price including every fee, write it down and stop when the hammer price would push the total over that number. Never bid merely to keep the experience alive. Count this complete when you have made one deliberate paddle bid within your limit, whether or not you win. Add it when you want to experience a ritual of value and nerve while proving that excitement does not have to overrule arithmetic.
