Visit a Mosque

Visit a Mosque

Step out of your shoes and into a building organised around prayer, community and the direction of Makkah. A mosque visit can reveal how architecture supports worship through the prayer hall, mihrab and minbar, while a local open day can also introduce the people who use the space throughout the week. Mosques are active places of worship rather than exhibits. Visitor access differs, especially during prayers and Friday congregational worship. Modest clothing is normally expected, footwear comes off before carpeted prayer areas, and photography of people or services requires permission. Contact the mosque or use an organised Visit My Mosque event, say that it is your first visit and ask about dress, gendered spaces and accessibility. Silence your phone, avoid walking in front of someone praying and follow the host's lead. Add this to your list and replace assumptions with a respectful conversation in a real community space.
