Visit a Temple

Visit a Temple

Cross a threshold designed for worship and let the building tell you how a community approaches the sacred. Depending on the tradition, a temple may centre on an image, shrine, altar, courtyard or ritual route, and what visitors may see can change during services and festivals. There is no universal temple etiquette. Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Sikh and other traditions have different practices, while rules also vary between countries and individual sites. Modest dress, restrained behaviour and removing footwear in specified areas are common, but copying a ritual without understanding it is less respectful than asking. Choose a temple that welcomes visitors, check its official guidance and go with a host or guided programme if one is available. Leave shoes and photography exactly where instructed, never interrupt worship and make donations only through the recognised channel. Add this to your list and enter ready to observe before trying to interpret.
