Visit Brunei

Stilt houses and a mosque beside the river in Kampong Ayer, Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei.

Brunei is small enough for the capital, river and rainforest to belong to the same short journey, but each changes the picture. Gold-domed mosques rise near Kampong Ayer's houses on stilts, while beyond the city mangroves and dense Bornean forest begin to take over. Use Bandar Seri Begawan as a base for several layers: walk the central waterfront and museums, visit a mosque outside prayer times with the required dress and behaviour, and cross the river with a responsible local boat operator to understand Kampong Ayer as a living community rather than a backdrop. Add protected forest only with an authorised, conservation-minded guide. Five to ten days is enough for a thoughtful first visit. Check current entry rules, local laws, medication restrictions, transport and weather before travel; Brunei has strict penalties and conservative social rules that visitors must understand. As of 28 August 2026, official advice also notes possible flight disruption from wider regional conditions, so monitor airlines and transit points. Count this complete when you have experienced both the river-city culture and a natural part of the country without reducing Brunei to its wealth or royal buildings. It suits travellers who find reward in a quieter destination and are prepared to observe rather than arrive loudly.
