Visit Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico

Illuminated limestone formations inside Carlsbad Caverns National Park.

The Natural Entrance descends from the bright Chihuahuan Desert into a cooler world, spiralling down until the surface disappears. Far below, the Big Room opens on a scale that changes how every column, pool and formation around it feels. Choose the route for your body and time. The Natural Entrance is a steep walk; the elevator reaches the Big Room, where a shorter accessible section offers a different way to experience the cave. Ranger-led tours reach other passages but have separate age, footwear and mobility requirements. A timed-entry reservation is required in addition to the park entrance fee, and popular dates fill. The cave stays around 13°C, so take a light layer and wear closed-toe shoes with good traction. Do not bring food, gum or equipment that could introduce contamination, and check elevator status before relying on it. Count this complete when you have followed an authorised cave route, moved at a pace that lets your eyes adjust and spent time looking beyond the largest formations. The enduring part is the shift from desert distance to the intricate landscape hidden beneath it.
