Visit Cinque Terre, Italy
Step off the train and the geography becomes immediate: houses rise in tight layers above a small harbour, vineyard terraces hold the slope and the next village lies beyond a headland rather than along a broad road. Cinque Terre rewards moving between its five communities slowly enough to notice how people fitted farming and fishing into steep Ligurian ground. Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore each occupy a different fold of the coast. Trains make the jumps between them quick, but walking reveals the dry-stone terraces and scale of the landscape. The famous seaward trail is only part of a much larger network, and individual sections can close after bad weather, for maintenance or to control numbers. Treating all five villages as a checklist in one crowded afternoon misses much of what distinguishes them. Base yourself nearby for at least two nights and travel by train rather than attempting to drive between villages. Check the national park's live trail status and weather alerts each morning. Some routes require a Cinque Terre Card; the train version can include regional travel on the specified line, while Via dell'Amore has its own booking arrangements. Wear proper walking shoes, carry water and do not cross a closure. Start early or stay into the evening, use marked paths, and spend with bakeries, growers and accommodation providers rather than bringing every meal from outside. Add Cinque Terre to your list for the relationship between villages and terrain. Give one walk and one unhurried meal more time than the platform-to-platform race.
